On 15 July 1099 succeeded the Christian army of the First Crusade take Jerusalem. The crusaders murdered almost every inhabitant of Jerusalem.
The Gesta Francorum - a contemporary Frankish document on the progress of the Crusade - reported (Book X, 38):
" you ... [our princes] prompted further that all Sarazenenleichen would also succeeded because of the terrible stench from the city, for almost the whole city was littered with dead bodies. Thus, the surviving Saracens dragged the dead out before the gates and piled them on bumps as high as houses. No one has ever seen such a slaughter of pagans or ever heard of it, because they were burned at the stake, which resembled pyramids, and no one but God alone knows how many there were. "
